How to Use Visualization Techniques: Kelly’s Introduction

Thank you, Steve, and I’m so happy to be back. Oh my gosh, I am just well, I’m over the moon. Excited to have you back. So you and I spent so much time together outside of the show. But it is always a delight, privilege, and honor to have your perspectives, insights, and wisdom as part of our conversations for organization business owners.

I know that you’ve been up to some really, really exciting things since the last time that we connected for an interview. So onward. You can certainly go back to your previous interviews, learn more about your path, your journey, all of that actually. But let’s start with what’s new. So, what’s new? What’s exciting? What made you excited about the road ahead over the next 12 months or so?

And then we’ll dive in with some of the questions. Okay. We’ll shoot. I think that, you know, first, let me just start by telling my story here since the last time that we spoke. And so probably over the course of the last year, has really developed and morphed and it started with, so as you mentioned in your introduction, I have a podcast, the Absolute Advantage, where I get to interview, like you, amazing people.

Well, not to toot my own horn. It’s awesome. Well, into. Anyway, where I get to interview really fascinating people and, you know, learn insights and exactly as you do here. And I had the pleasure of interviewing a gentleman by the name of John Mitchell last January. So it was January of 2018. And in that discussion, he introduced me to a technique, called the think it be a 12 minute a day methodology.

And I was fascinated by it. He’s developed this. He teaches it at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. And, I was just fascinated by it. It’s really about reprogramming your consciousness, and rewiring you. And so I was fascinated and at the end of the episode, I don’t know, something just compelled me in that conversation to say, hey, I’m going to try this.

I want to see what this looks like. I am always seeking to grow and look at new things and take things to the next level. And so I said, if I try this, let’s circle back and do an encore interview and share the results with our listeners. And so, he was game. And so we went on this journey together and he walked me through his process.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Evolution of Kelly’s Career

We developed this visualization. And where the 12 minutes comes into play is that it takes 12 minutes a day to read. But there’s a lot of work going into creating the visualization itself, because you’re getting really, really clear, crystal clear on what your vital priorities are in your business. Your success strategy, different areas of your personal life as well.

But it really is focused on business. And I started following this process and my business and my life started to change drastically in a very short window of time. And so through that process and working together for a few months, a business partnership developed and and, and I became a partner in Think It Be It.

And so that’s been kind of the next leg of my journey here. I’m still very active and involved in my other businesses. But this for me was kind of the next step in my career evolution and really focusing on that success and human achievement, industry and that success through science. The brain has always fascinated me. And, so, you know, ultimately in this, this last year has been that journey we developed an online course.

And are just getting fantastic feedback. The same kind of results that I got. So it’s just been a wild ride and amazing. So it’s been a great year and I’m really excited about the impact piece because that’s what it’s about for me. If I can help people experience what I’ve experienced, in the last year, then life is good.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: The Law of Attraction and Reprogramming

So, John Mitchell, who Kelly is, referencing here, he was, he just came back for an encore here at Onward Nation as well. So you may already be, you may be remembering him already, because that was just a few short weeks ago. February 13th, to be exact. So you can go back to episode 868, again on February 13th, episode 868, where John and I talked about how you can reprogram your brain in 12 minutes.

It was awesome. It was so awesome, Kelly, that, almost immediately after airing the episode, I had a conversation with a business owner who was thinking about her own thought leadership in this, in that and in wanting to make some improvements there. And so she and I were talking through that process and she goes, look, I gotta say, I just started listening to your show and I knew that we were gonna have this phone call.

And so I started listening to that episode 868, you know, about, you know, the Law of Attraction and Reprogramming and all of that. That was so impactful, for me. And I’m like, wow, that’s awesome. And so on this episode, I mean, it’s transformative. It really is. And so, Kelly, let’s go back to sort of your journey here because this is not only you’re really cool about your journey, but also then due diligence and how you decided that this was something that you know, was not only attractive to you, but then, you know, truly work.

So did I hear you correctly that you went through the process, the visualization process, for about three months or so, about or about 90 days to really make sure that it worked for you. Am I tracking with you? Absolutely you are. And that’s an important piece of the equation here. And what’s interesting about this is that when you map out this and create your visualization, again, you have a ton of clarity around what’s important to you, the direction you’re moving in, how you’re going to get there, and you’re feeding that to yourself every day.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Evaluating New Opportunities

So I’m doing this. I have a ton of clarity around the direction that I’m going in and through that process. Then John and I are having these discussions, around some of the different nuances of visualization and, and the language that we use in it. And you know, so it was just this very fascinating discussion. And so first off, through my visualization and getting a lot of clarity around the direction I wanted to go in, I knew that this idea of a partnership was in alignment with that.

So that’s first and foremost, I think the importance when you’re looking at determining whether, well, evaluating new opportunities because, you know, I think the more successful you get, the more opportunities present themselves. And it’s easy to fall into that kind of purple squirrel next shiny object, you know, that kind of thing. At least do this for me.

I’ll speak for myself. But that’s true. It is true. Yeah. So in my visualization, I had a ton of clarity around what I wanted. And so I had a system to evaluate opportunities in there because that was a challenge for me, the next shiny object and staying focused. And so I had kind of a litmus test on those to run different opportunities through.

So that was the first thing I put my visualization to work by making sure not to say yes. When John said, hey, would you consider going into a partnership the first thing that normally would have come out of my mouth and operating in that unconscious kind of state would be, yes, because that’s what I do. That’s my natural default mode.

Instead, at that moment I said, you know, it’s intriguing and I’d like to continue to have a discussion around this and learn a little bit more about it. Let’s talk about what those next steps would look like versus just saying yes, which again, was a challenge for me and why I built it into my visualization because it was my inability to say no, no more frequently was derailing my ability to focus on the things that really mattered.

And they were. And creating distractions for me. So we went through that process. And so that was the first part of this story. And the second is my advice. And I think why this story is important is that we are going into a partnership with anyone. I mean, it’s like a marriage. It’s a work relationship. So this isn’t anything to go into lightly.

So there was a process that we went through from a vetting standpoint to make sure that we were in alignment, with each other, with the vision of the company, with our work styles, and whether those would expand or contract, by working together. And so, there was a whole process that we went through to get a very, very lengthy answer to your question.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: How The Visualization Piece is Starting to Materialize

Well, that’s really good. So it speaks to the due diligence and whether an Onward Nation business owner is considering, you know, that type of thing. Maybe they have an opportunity to, to start a new venture, start a new business, or maybe it’s a promotional partnership or something like that. You just kind of added a few litmus tests into what should be their process for due diligence.

That’s awesome. Let’s go back to the visualization piece for a minute because you were obviously kind of experimenting with it. Is there really something there, some meat and potatoes to this. Think It Be It thing and so testing love that. You know, testing it kind of rigorously and being sort of the guinea pig to test it.

When did you start? And I’m sure it wasn’t overnight. But when did you start to see some traction? Or maybe you had a couple of moments, like at what point when you were going through you’re like, wait a minute, I’m seeing something here. This really has some potential. You know, I would say for me, I started to see some things right away.

You know, within a couple of weeks. Okay. Where, you know, because one of the things that you’re doing in this visualization is you’re really informing your brain so that reticular activating system, you are informing it. And so it begins looking for things. So even just by reading it every day and again, this is all about you, what your focus is, what your goals are, how you’re going to achieve them.

So, you know, I’ll back up by saying this isn’t, although the Law of Attraction 100%, I believe in, but you have to there has to be action behind that. Right? You can’t just dream. You’ve got to take action. And so what this did was, I’m an action taker by nature. But this process helped me take action with laser focus.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Becoming More Action-Oriented

Okay, so tell us now you got my curiosity going. So, tell me a little bit more about that. Like how did it do that for me? For you? Because like, I know how action oriented you are. It’s out now and I’m super excited. I’m thinking, wait a minute. She took her action orientation and moved it up a level or two.

So that’s impressive. So like so, tell us a little bit more about how it did that for you. So the way that I became even more action oriented is that in my visualization, I’m super specific about how I spend my time and what I spend my time on and what my routine is as far as how I lay the foundation for my day.

So one of the things that I have in that maybe many of your listeners have is that I have the ability to be consistent. So I would go for a week or two. So where I was really good about sitting down and following a process and mapping out time blocking and, and then slowly, you know, something comes up one day you don’t stick to that kind of formula.

And then one day it goes into 2 to 3, and then a month goes by and you’re like, what the heck happened? I fell out of that kind of good practice with the visualization. You are very, very clear about how you spend your time. You’re so you’re you’re saying this to yourself, you’re reading this. I even recorded mine in my voice.

And it’s part of my routine now where I listen to it when I’m on the treadmill. So I hear it in my own voice. But so there is no option. Like I just go and do it. It’s part of me. It has become like brushing my teeth. I don’t have to think about it anymore. I just do it.

Does that make sense? So in terms of just taking action, I’m laser focused and again, it creates that foundation for me. My brain, because it’s been informed of exactly what I should be doing and the things I should be focusing on that move the needle in my business, when I’m doing something that isn’t aligned with that my consciousness is like, ding ding ding ding ding, you know, like, oh, shoot, you need to.

You’re off track here, get on track. So it helps keep you in your lane too, because you’re feeding yourself this every single day and wiring your brain this way. It just started. You just naturally start to do it without thinking. Does that make sense? It makes total sense. But it is. Absolutely. I mean, there’s tons of science behind it, and it works.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: The Litmus Test

Okay. So I don’t think it sounds foo foo because you and I’ve talked about this a lot, during the show outside of the show. And obviously I’ve had conversations with John, but just in case some other business owners are thinking, okay, this sounds foo foo. Let me go back Onward to an acronym that Kelly just shared with you, you know, a few minutes ago.

And that was the raz, which is the reticular, activating system that’s in your brain. And so let me give you a litmus test because we’ve all experienced this before, whether we’re walking through a busy airport, busy, let’s say you’re in Chicago O’Hare and you’re walking down a terminal, you’re in the K terminal or whatever. And I guess it’s terminal three of the K concourse, but anyway, and somebody says Kelly and you hear it and it’s because your brain is programmed to hear your name and whether the person was actually, you know, shouting your name or not or looking for you or not.

You heard that or let’s say, you know, you buy a brand new white Nissan Maxima and you’re driving around town and then it’s like all of a sudden everybody’s driving a white Nissan Maxima. You’re like, how is this possible? Right or right or because what happens Onward Nation is we see what we focus on. So Kelly, if you’re doing a visualization about whether that’s business goals or personal goals and you’re focused on those things and then you start taking action on those things are going to become more apparent to you.

They may have been on your periphery anyway, but unless your race is in tune to that, you don’t see it right? 100%. I mean, you’re right on the money there. And let me give you an example that relates to business as it relates to. So something that was built into my visualization was around something that’s really important to me just as an individual, but also in business.

Is this being a connector and somebody who connects people and resources helps connect people to resources. And so that’s built into my visualization. And before it was something I love to do when I thought of it or when I wasn’t going 100 miles an hour and you know, even then something would pop into my head and I’d say, oh, I want to make that introduction and then it would be out of my head as quick as it came in.

But now what happens is, like, when I’m in the middle of a conversation, I am recognizing all kinds of opportunities for ways that I can bring additional value to this individual based on different connections that I have that I can make introductions to because my brain is looking for that. And I’ve said it like, this is one of the things that’s important to you, and it’s an important piece of your business strategy, and it’s an important piece of your relationship strategy.

Now my brain is seeing these opportunities that were in front of me every time before that. I’d had a conversation with this individual or with this client, and I wasn’t seeing it because I wasn’t looking for it. Does that make sense? It makes total sense.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: The Impact on Kelly’s Other Businesses

Okay, so let’s take that piece then and kind of move out of our mind a bit.

But not the experiment here about the visualization. Take us inside then the other businesses that you’re leading. How did this then impact your other businesses? So on a 30,000ft level, this was like adding rocket fuel. So in terms of what it’s done for my businesses with growth, with my internal teams. So one of the things that’s built into my visualizations is around one of the top three things.

That is my job within the organization is the development of my team. And, so getting crystal clear about that and making sure that the activities that I do are in those in the three buckets and one of those being development of my team. So many things started to come to surface through this process and focusing on developing my team.

And so just with that one particular action, you know, with, with the mentoring, with the empowering the team and one of the ways it’s built into my visualization of doing that is the way that I show up with them and how I’ve programed my brain for my first response to not be to solve the problem for them, but to walk them through a process to come to a solution on their own.

For me, that was a real challenge before. Like I would be solving the problem and halfway through solving it before I even realized I was doing it because it’s part of my DNA. So I’m an enabler by nature. And so, I’ve had to reprogram that and by doing that one thing.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Become The Expert in Solving Problems

So back to the question about what this has done for your other businesses by empowering our teams, the level of commitment, the level of engagement, the entrepreneurial kind of spirit that’s running through the organizations now again, with like adding rocket fuel.

You know, if we just, you know, we talk a lot about engagement, right? You know, how unengaged our workforces are. And this one, the component of focusing on your team and increasing that level of engagement again has been rocket fuel. And that’s just been one thing. But overall, 30,000ft view profits have gone up substantially.

New super new creative ideas, new problems that we’re solving for clients which are translating to new revenue streams. So good stuff. I mean, by no exaggeration. So there’s, thank you for that. That’s and I love how you described the rocket fuel. You also gave us a really big nugget there that I just want to kind of pick out, just a little bit more because this is a really, really big piece because sometimes we can go into meetings, situations, mastermind sessions, whatever, or with our teammates, and there’s a problem there on the table.

And in our first instinct, Onward Nation is to do exactly what Kelly said is solve the problem, be the field general and be the expert and solve it, and then move on to the next thing. But then the word that I really want you to focus on here, Onward Nation, is the word that she used.

She used two words: empowerment. But she said, I’m an enabler now. So we’re certainly not trying to cripple our team or to stunt their growth or to do anything like that. But Kelly, when was the entrepreneur or the business owner step in and say, oh, that’s easy. It’s just no.

And then move on. That actually hurts the team doesn’t it? It absolutely does. And when, you know, I work a lot on kind of reframing things. And for me, so not only building it into the visualization, but when I reframed it. And this is just the way my brain works. And this connected with me and kind of was like a gut punch was when I solve problems for them, I take away opportunity from them.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Fulfilling Your Goals as An Entrepreneur

So, I hold them back from their greatness. And anybody who knows me like that’s what I’m all about. Like, I want people to be great. So when I realized that some of my behavior was directly impacting their ability to be great and potentially taking away opportunity from them, you know, that for me was a motivator. So, you know, you could almost look at that as a, you know, I’m negatively motivated by that because it’s against kind of what I’m about.

Does that make sense? Right. That’s really powerful because like on the service or on the surface, excuse me, a business owner might think, oh, I’m doing them a service, I’m solving a problem. We’re helping a client quicker or faster or whatever. But then as you just described it, that’s where the gut punch comes in. Because the reality is, no, you’re actually damaging your team or not helping them become everything that they should be coming in.

Oh, by the way, Onward. You’re stripping the scale right out of your business. You’re keeping the business revolving around you, and that’s a problem if you’re going to build and scale. Right, Kelly? Absolutely. That was the next layer to this too to kind of add on to the discussion is when you are not empowering your employees and implementing some of these practices, helping them grow, providing opportunity for them then you are in essence tying your, you know, one arm behind your back as far as your business is concerned.

It is a constraint to growth and to scalability to your point. But I think I don’t know. I know every entrepreneur is different, but for me, it was important to do the things that I love to do, which is to create, which is the strategy part of the business, which is to work on my business.

And so, not only is this a gift to them and providing opportunity to them and empowering them, but it is also serving me and fulfilling my goals as an entrepreneur. So, I’m kind of hanging on this point here, you know, for a few minutes, because it’s not only because it’s so important. I mean, because obviously it is.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Skills That Business Owners Need to Master

It is important. But as Kelly’s illustrating here, too, it’s certainly not something that we intend to do. It is an innocent mistake and it’s something that we do innocently. It’s something that we want to share our insights or wisdom or experience and so forth, and try to be helpful to as many people as possible. But when we come at it from this angle, in the way that Kelly’s describing it so beautifully, that’s where the danger becomes, because you’re actually crippling your team as opposed to being helpful like you want to be.

And so Kelly, that was great. Thank you for that. Absolutely. Wow. Okay. So this is really, really wonderful. As far as the visualization, your experimentation of it, but then also how that added rocket fuel into the other businesses that you’re leading, operating, and so forth on a day to day basis that that’s awesome.

Okay. So let’s kind of think of this now using kind of your words again, it sort of the 30,000ft level. And let’s think about that from a skills perspective. Let’s say that our Onward Nation business owners are thinking, okay, I want to get better at this. I want to make improvements here. I like the idea of visualization.

Let’s think about it from a skills perspective. Is there a skill? Is there a habit? Is there something that they need to be practicing on a day to day basis, something that they really need to get good at in order to be good at this? Gosh, you know, I think that the first thing that comes to mind is that this is about doing the work upfront, again, having a crystal clear vision of who you want to be, how you want to show up, what habits you want to build in.

Because that’s the other thing too, you know, is that unconscious mind, you know, controls 90 or better percent of our thoughts every day. And so we go back into that default kind of habit mode. So I think for, you know, this, it’s about getting a ton of clarity. It’s about creating, you know, this visualization and then simply reading it every day.

That’s it. That really is all I do. I have a group of habits that I do that kick off my morning routine and my 12 minute a day visualization is one of those things. But it informs, it sets the tone. So let me give you an example. And this may resonate with the listeners.

How many times a week, Stephen? And I’ll ask this of you. Okay. How many times a week do you look at your business plan? Oh, gosh. Well, let’s see, probably 5 or 6. Okay. So that’s good like that. Most of the time people do it once and pull it out and you get it kind of.

But I kind of. But I kind of cheat, though, because. So I know that the purpose of your question, like most business owners, is to either feel guilty for not having what they want to have, like that, you know, 70 page word document or whatnot. And I sort of cheat the system because, you know, you know how much I love whiteboards.

And in my office I have three of them, which is my visualization of my business plan. So, literally I’m looking at it right now and but probably 5 or 6 times a week, like I’m getting up, standing in front of it intently, making updates and that kind of stuff. So it’s always in front of me.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Making A Pivot to The Business Plans

As opposed to that dusty 70 page word document that’s never read. Exactly. And that was my point. And so I’ll tell my story. Then I would pull out our business plan, once a year. We would pull it out for, you know, and look at it kind of be like, oh, you know, and it wasn’t a 70 page business plan, you know, because that just feels daunting.

And you know, businesses are fluid. And so we never really did a robust business plan. But the point around this is, I am reading this every single day. And then I am making iterations and adjustments every day based on and maybe not every day, but I’m able to make them more quickly because I see where either off path where we maybe need to be flexing and moving in a different direction.

So I am so turned into what the direction is, and that was not something that I was doing before. I mean, like, so I think that’s part of the power of this is, that I am plugged into this every single day as far as what the business plan is, what our strategy for success is and what my role is in that strategy for success.

I love that keeping it front and center, whether we go back to thinking, grow rich or we look at, you know, other helpful resources in the space, the reality is that, you know, we get what we focus on. Yes. Whether we’re focused on bad stuff, whether we’re focused on good stuff or whatever, the brain’s momentum, if that’s even a thing.

I mean, it works. It’s either working for you or against you. And so what you’re sharing with us right now is a very, very strategic but yet also tactical way to have it working for you as opposed to against you. Yes, absolutely. Yeah. This is so awesome. Oh, okay. So I know that our time is running short, and I’m just very, very grateful that you said yes to come back for a third time.

Super generous of you to do that. And share your insights and wisdom with Onward Nation yet again. But before we go, before we close out and say goodbye, is there any final advice? Do you have any final advice? Is there maybe anything you think we might have missed? Perhaps, and then. And then tell Onward Nation business owners the best way to connect with you, Kelly.

How to Use Visualization Techniques: Final Advice and How to Connect with Kelly

You know, I think so. The final bit of advice, it starts with clarity. You need to know where you’re going if you’re going to get there. And that whole point that you just made, Stephen, about what you focus on, you know, so what you envision in detail on a daily basis is what starts to show up in your life.

And so, you have to have a lot of clarity around that, you know, to inform the direction you’re going in. Otherwise the other way, you’re just kind of bumping around. So, you know, that would be my bit of advice is to get a lot of clarity around again, what your business does, the direction you’re going in and the part that you play in that, you know, in your business and this is succinct again, this is just 12 minutes a day.

It takes up one sheet of paper front and back between several different parts. But that’s where it starts with clarity and knowing where you’re going. As far as how people can get in touch with us. So, you know, you can connect with me through LinkedIn. It’s just Kelly Hatfield, and, you know, a reach out to me through my different sites.

But if you’re interested, we have a free five day email course for Think It Be It that is all about this visualization and creating your visualization. So if you’re interested in learning more about that, you can text the word genius to 44222. And then we also will make sure to provide Onward Nation a link for a free e-book that we have available to you too.

So, anyway, that’s how you can reach me if you’d like. So the e-book is that. Because when you and I were talking in the green room before, the recording, is that the e-book, that I think is entitled Five Requirements to netting over $1 million per year is that one. That is it. Awesome.

That’s the one. Yes. Okay. Well, that sounds really good. So, Onward Nation, no matter how many notes you took and I took a bunch or how often you go back and relisten to Kelly’s words of wisdom, the key is you have to do exactly what she is doing. She’s so action oriented. So she just gave you the ingredients, the recipe, the 30,000ft strategy, then broke it down tactically.

Now you have to take that and be just like her. Be action oriented, take action on everything that she so generously shared with you today. And Kelly, we all had the same 86,400 seconds today. You are running multiple companies and yet still you said yes. To come back to share your insights and wisdom. I appreciate your generosity, my friend.

Thank you so very much. Kelly was my pleasure. Thank you. Stephen, this episode is complete. So head over to OnwardNation.com for show notes and more food to fuel your ambition. Continue to find your recipe for success here at Onward Nation.
